Moving to California: Cost, Traffic, Neighborhoods,
and What to Know

June 10, 2024 10 min read Destination Guide

California is simultaneously one of the most desirable destinations and one of the most significant lifestyle adjustments in the country. People move there for the weather, the culture, and the career opportunities. They stay or leave based on the housing costs, the taxes, and the traffic.

The Cost Reality

California has the highest marginal income tax rate in the country (13.3% over $1 million, 9.3% over $66,000 for single filers). Combined with housing costs that remain among the highest in the country despite a significant correction from 2022 peaks, the financial case for California requires a genuine accounting. The weather and quality-of-life advantages are real; so is the cost.

Where to Live in California

The Bay Area — San Francisco, the Peninsula, the East Bay, and Silicon Valley. The highest costs, the deepest tech concentration, and a commute infrastructure that hasn't kept pace with the job market. Remote work has changed the calculus here significantly since 2020.

Los Angeles metro — enormous, fragmented, and varied. The experience of living in Los Feliz is categorically different from living in the Valley or the South Bay. Research neighborhoods, not just "Los Angeles."

San Diego — the best weather in the country by most measures, strong military and biotech presence, more manageable than LA, lower costs than the Bay Area. Increasingly competitive.

Sacramento and the Central Valley — the genuinely affordable California option. Less of the coastal culture but dramatically better housing costs. Viable if your work allows it.

Moving to California: The Logistics

California is a common destination from the Northeast and Midwest, which means movers to California are in high demand during peak season. The cross-country distance (1,800–2,800 miles depending on origin) also means transit time of 5–10 days after pickup. Book your mover well in advance and build buffer into your housing timeline. New resident vehicle registration
California requires new residents to register vehicles within 20 days. California vehicle registration fees are based on vehicle value and are significantly higher than most states. Budget for this before your move.
