The best time to move long distance depends on what you're optimizing for — price, weather, availability, or your specific destination state. Here's how to think through the timing decision.
For Best Price: October Through March
Demand for long-distance movers peaks in summer and drops significantly in fall and winter. Moving in the off-peak window (roughly October through March, avoiding major holidays and end-of-month dates) typically saves 5–20% compared to peak season rates. Tuesday through Thursday are the lowest-demand days of any week.
For Best Weather: Varies by Route
The weather calculus is different depending on your route:
- Moving to the South or Florida: Spring (March–April) or fall (October–November) avoids summer heat without the demand premium
- Moving from the Northeast in winter: Late February through March is the "shoulder" — weather is improving but peak season hasn't started. Good balance of price and logistics
- Moving to or from the Mountain West: Avoid mountain passes in winter if possible (November–February). Spring and fall are ideal
- Moving to California: The dry season (April–October) makes for easier logistics. Winter rains in Northern California can complicate deliveries
For Best Availability
Booking 4–8 weeks in advance is ideal for most long-distance moves. During peak season (May–August), book 8–12 weeks out. During the off-peak, 3–4 weeks is usually sufficient. The further your move and the more specific your dates, the earlier you should book.
For Military Moves (PCS)
PCS orders often cluster in summer, which is the worst time for pricing and availability. If your orders give you any flexibility on the reporting date, even shifting by 2–3 weeks can meaningfully improve your options. AEY Moving specializes in military PCS moves.
