Long distance moves have a lot of moving parts. Missing one step can cost you money, time, or real stress on moving day. This checklist organizes everything by week so nothing falls through the cracks.
8 Weeks Out
8 Weeks Before Moving Day
Research and vet at least 3 moving companies — check USDOT numbers and reviews
Get binding quotes from each — submit full inventory, not just home size
Book your mover — the best dates fill up fast, especially in summer
Start a moving binder — keep all contracts, receipts, and contacts in one place
Notify your employer of your new address and any remote work arrangements
Research your new city — neighborhoods, schools, utilities, DMV requirements
6 Weeks Out
6 Weeks Before Moving Day
Start decluttering — sell, donate, or discard what you're not taking
Begin collecting boxes and packing supplies if self-packing
Pack non-essential items — seasonal clothes, books, decorations
Start using up food that won't travel well — frozen items, pantry staples
Contact your children's schools to arrange records transfer
Schedule disconnection of utilities at current home

Your Essentials Bag — What to Pack Last
Pack this bag separately and keep it with you in the car — not on the truck:
- Medications and first aid basics
- Phone chargers and laptop
- 2–3 days of clothes and toiletries
- Important documents — IDs, passports, insurance cards, moving contract
- Snacks, water, and cash
- Bedding for the first night (or plan to buy it there)
- Basic tools — screwdriver, box cutter, utility knife
