How to Pack a Kitchen for
a Long Distance Move

February 12, 2025

The kitchen is typically the most time-consuming room to pack for a long distance move — and the most likely to result in breakage if packed incorrectly. A long-distance haul means your boxes will be loaded, stacked, driven over 500–2,500 miles, and unloaded. Packaging that would survive a local move may not survive a cross-country one.

What You'll Need

  • Dish packs (heavy-duty double-walled boxes specifically for dishes)
  • Packing paper (not newspaper — the ink transfers)
  • Bubble wrap for stemware and delicate items
  • Cell kits for dishes (cardboard dividers)
  • Small boxes for heavy items (pots, pans, small appliances)
  • Medium boxes for lighter items (dry goods, lightweight cookware)
  • Stretch wrap for appliances

Pack Heaviest Items First, Lightest on Top

The fundamental rule of kitchen packing: heavy items in small boxes, lighter items in larger boxes. A large box full of pots and pans is too heavy to lift safely and risks crushing itself during transit. A small box full of ceramic plates is manageable. Pack with this in mind and label every box with its destination room and weight indication.

Dishes and Plates

Dishes travel best standing on their edges, not flat. Think of how a wine glass is stronger when held upright than lying on its side — the same principle applies. Line the bottom of the dish pack with 4 inches of crumpled packing paper. Wrap each plate individually in packing paper. Stand plates vertically in the box. Fill all gaps with additional packing paper. The box should feel solid when shaken.

Glasses and Stemware

Wrap each piece individually in bubble wrap, stuffing the interior of glasses with packing paper first. Cell kits (cardboard dividers) are worth using for stemware — they prevent glass-to-glass contact during transit. Never pack glasses without individual wrapping on a long-distance move.

What to Discard Before Packing

The kitchen is the best place to declutter before a long-distance move. The cost of moving duplicates, expired pantry items, and rarely-used appliances over 1,000 miles is almost always more than replacing them at the destination. Go through every cabinet and drawer and be honest about what you actually use.

When to Consider Professional Packing

For a long-distance move, professional packing of the kitchen specifically is often worth the cost. Our crew packs kitchens daily and brings all materials — dish packs, cell kits, bubble wrap, packing paper. The cost adds roughly $1.00–1.50 per cu ft to your move. The reduction in breakage risk on a 1,500-mile haul typically justifies it. Learn more about our packing services.
