The short answer: 4–8 weeks out is ideal for most moves. 2 weeks is the minimum for a non-emergency move. Here's the full breakdown by season and situation.
By Season
- Summer (June–August) — Book 6–10 weeks out. This is peak moving season. Good trucks fill up fast. If you're moving between July 4 and Labor Day, 8 weeks minimum is not overcautious.
- Spring (April–May) — Book 4–6 weeks out. School year endings and lease cycles make spring the second busiest season. April 30 and May 31 are some of the busiest days of the year.
- Fall (September–November) — Book 3–5 weeks out. Demand drops after Labor Day. More flexibility, but snowbird season creates a surge for Florida-bound moves starting in October.
- Winter (December–March) — Book 2–4 weeks out. Off-peak season. Most carriers have availability, but holiday blackouts (Dec 22–Jan 2) apply — book before or plan to be flexible.
What Happens If You Wait Too Long?
With a reputable direct-haul carrier, waiting too long usually means one of three things:
- Your preferred move date is unavailable and you have to move a week earlier or later
- You end up with a moving broker instead of a direct carrier (brokers have more "availability" because they haven't confirmed a truck yet)
- You pay a last-minute premium — 15–25% higher than normal rates in peak season
Watch out
If a moving company claims they can handle your move next week in the middle of July with no premium — be skeptical. That usually means broker, not carrier. Ask directly: "Are you a licensed carrier or a broker?"
